The experience of a lifetime

6 September, 2024

Following its hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, the IEU-QNT and the Teachers Union of Alberta (Canada) teacher exchange program has restarted on the basis of shorter-term exchanges rather than the previous 12-month ones.

Jordan has recently commenced the first part of his teacher exchange with Garrett – joining him at Marymount College.

Unique perspectives

Jordan said his time with Garrett at Marymount School had offered him a unique perspective on education.

“The structured support and resources available to students ensure their success, setting a standard that has sparked innovative ideas for my school back home,” Jordan said.

“Garrett exudes an infectious passion for History, Geography, and Religious Studies.

“His dedication has been inspiring and educational, further enriching my experience.

“This exchange has been a profound opportunity for personal and professional growth,” Jordan said.

New experiences

Not only has Jordan shadowed Garrett, visiting classes and sharing his knowledge of Canada, but he has also been a guest coach at an AFL carnival, taught American Football to year 7s and attended the Corporate Box at a Gold Coast Titans Rugby League match.

“Every moment has been filled with excitement and new experiences,” Garrett said.

“One of the most fulfilling aspects of this exchange for Jordan has been sharing his passion for Canadian geography, trivia, and notable Canadian figures with eager students.

“Their enthusiasm and engagement has been inspiring, creating a dynamic exchange of cultural knowledge,” Garrett said.

Beyond the classroom

Garrett said being in such a breathtaking part of Australia as the Gold Coast has allowed Jordan to explore stunning beaches and picturesque headlands.

Jordan said he is already planning his return to the land down under.

“Australia has captured my heart, and I cannot wait to share my newfound insights and experiences with my students and colleagues back home,” Jordan said.

Meanwhile, Garrett will visit “warm and sunny” Red Deer, Alberta this coming December and January, with the average temperature being minus 20c.
