What we do

With more than 100 years of experience, the IEU is the only professional and industrial voice for education employees in the non-government sector.

We are a member-led organisation, governed by an executive comprised of members from across Queensland and the Northern Territory. Find out more about our union’s Branch Executive here.

What is the IEU difference?
IEU membership makes a difference in members’ careers, IEU workplace Chapters, as well as the broader education community.

That difference saw our union recoup $1.1 million for members over the past financial year in compensation, underpayments and allowances.

The IEU difference is reflected in our supportive environment for members, a strong network of Chapters and Reps, dedicated organisers and offices across Click here to find out more about our organisational structure and staff.

Our union supports a range of member committees and networks that allow all members to have a voice on the issues that matter to them. Click here to find out more about our networks and committees.

Our core work includes:

Bargaining for better wages and conditions through IEU negotiatied collective agreements.

Supporting members through access to expert workplace and industrial advice with no hidden fees.

Providing members with the most comprehensive professional indemnity insurance available.

Contributing to a fairer society through the pursuit of social justice, including advocacy for First Nations Peoples, women and the LGBTIQ+ community.

Elevating the status of the profession by representing members on government bodies and through the media.

Supporting members to build their skills by providing quality professional development.

Fostering connections with like-minded organisations to maximise benefits to our members.

Union membership is an investment in your career as well as a commitment to protecting the teaching profession and the education sector.

Being an IEU-QNT member means always having someone there to support you when you face challenges at work. Joining our union also ensures there will always be a strong voice fighting for the profession.

Our membership fees reflect the level of professional representation and support we provide to members.

Fee levels for all members are based on annual salary rates and are fully tax deductible. We also offer reduced fee rates to graduate teachers, relief and supply staff and members on parental or unpaid leave.

Student membership, for those studying education at university, is free of charge as part of our commitment to supporting the next generation of teachers.
