An IEU teacher member has secured an ongoing position following intervention from our union’s industrial team.
The member was initially employed on a fixed-term contract to cover another teacher’s parental leave.
Partway through the contract, the member noticed the school had advertised multiple ongoing teaching positions.
The teacher then applied for conversion to a continuing position, which the employer initially denied.
Fair Work Act provides strong protection
Our union’s industrial team supported the member to argue they were eligible for conversion to a continuing position under the Fair Work Act (FWA), which contains strong protections to encourage secure jobs.
Our union argued the employer had applied a narrow interpretation of the FWA and that fixed-term contracts should not be used as a matter of course.
