Right to disconnect’s first anniversary shows laws working as intended

14 October, 2025

The absence of disputes regarding the right to disconnect laws, one year after they came into effect, indicates the legislation is functioning as intended and benefiting Australian workers.

Analysis by the Centre for Future Work has found that since right to disconnect laws were introduced in 2024, the amount of unpaid overtime performed by employees has fallen by 33 per cent.

The right to disconnect came into effect for most workers on 26 August 2024 and from 26 August 2025 for small business employees.
