APST review an opportunity to contemporise standards, address current deficiencies

The first formal review of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) since their introduction 15 years ago provides a chance to ensure the standards evolve to suit the contemporary professional landscape of teaching.

Conducted by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), the review of teacher standards is underway until February 2027, with education stakeholders invited to submit feedback. 

A review of the Principal Standard will also take place from September 2026 to May 2027.

IEU-QNT members employed as specialist teachers participated in a union survey examining the challenges, changes and impacts arising from the new curriculum guideline introduced by the Non-State Schools Accreditation Board (NSSAB) in 2025.

The new curriculum guideline introduced percentage-based programming time and permitted primary schools to cease programming some specialist subjects.
