LNP government only roadblock to Respect@Work

26 May, 2026

The Crisafulli LNP government has stalled a previously passed bill to strengthen anti-discrimination laws, leaving implementation unlikely in the current term of parliament.

The Strengthening Protections for Queensland Workers Amendment Bill, which initially passed parliament in September 2024, would place a positive duty on Queensland employers requiring them to take all practical steps to prevent sex-based harassment and discrimination.

On 13 May 2026, the government discharged the amendment bill, meaning it is no longer before the parliament and unlikely to progress in the current term.

Laws already widely consulted

When initially announcing its “pause” on the revised laws, the Crisafulli government stated it needed more time to consult.

However, prior to passing through parliament, the laws were subject to a three-and-a-half-year consultation process led by the Queensland Human Rights Commission (QHRC).
