Personal leave: do you know your entitlements?

20 August, 2026

Personal leave is an important working right that supports employees to care for themselves, as well as members of their immediate families and households.

But there are some lesser-known facets to personal leave that all employees should be aware of.

What is personal leave?

Personal leave is an umbrella term encompassing both sick leave and carer’s leave.

Paid leave is available to permanent employees who are unable to go to work when they are sick or need to undertake caring responsibilities.

Generally, a full-time employee accrues 10 days of personal leave each year, with part-time staff accruing leave on a pro-rata basis.

Unused personal leave continues to accumulate, but it is not paid out when an employee ceases employment.
