Our union’s million-dollar difference

27 October, 2025

Our union has secured $1,121,491 in payments and settlements for members over the past 12 months.

The diligent work of the IEU industrial team in upholding members’ rights at work made all the difference across a range of key cases, including:

  • $60,000 in a pre-court settlement over governance matters.
  • $179,000 in a redundancy settlement, where an employer proposal did not constitute a genuine redundancy.
  • $60,000 in compensation for an unfair dismissal case – the maximum compensation available.
  • $20,000 in compensation for a work-related stress matter.
  • $58,000 to settle a matter resulting in a mutual separation between employee and employer.
  • $8,000 to rectify an historic underpayment case.
  • $69,000 in a redundancy settlement, where the employer initially miscalculated entitlements.

Upholding your rights at work

IEU-QNT Branch Secretary Terry Burke said the union difference was clear in upholding members’ rights at work.

“Our union is a member-funded organisation which operates in members’ best interests,” he said.

“The IEU industrial team has runs on the board when it comes to ensuring members are paid fairly and their rights are protected in settlement matters.

“Outcomes over the past 12 months show it pays to be an IEU member, with over $1.12 million in payments and settlements returned to members,” Mr Burke said.

Don’t go it alone

Mr Burke said underpayment and settlement cases often presented stressful and uncertain times for employees.

“IEU membership means that you do not face these uncertain times alone,” he said.

“You have the advice and support of IEU organisers and industrial officers available to ensure the best possible outcome in your individual circumstances,” Mr Burke said.

Is it time to check in?

Mr Burke encouraged members to regularly check in on their rights at work – particularly at key points in their career cycle.

“Just as we should check in regularly with our health and other facets of our lives, it’s important to check in on our rights at work,” he said.

“Key career points such as promotions, gaining new qualifications, pay rises or switching jobs are good times to check in.

“At any point where you sense that something is not right, it’s time to ask the question: ‘are my working rights being upheld here?’”

“Our union’s industrial team is only a phone call or email away when you need support,” he said.
