Celebrating 25 years of IEU membership

28 October, 2025

This year, 199 IEU members have been recognised as part of our union’s 25-Year Member Program.

For a quarter of a century, this group of teachers, principals, school officers, early childhood educators and retired members have embodied our union’s values and demonstrated a deep understanding of the power of the collective to enact positive industrial and professional change.

Early in Term 3, IEU Chapters across Queensland and the Northern Territory held celebrations to honour our 2025 cohort.

This year’s 25-year members join over 2500 members who have previously reached this illustrious milestone since the inception of our 25-Year Member Program in 2012.

IEU-QNT Assistant Secretary / Treasurer Rebecca Sisson said our 25-Year Member program was an opportunity to recognise our long-term members and their contributions to our union and the wider profession.

“This is an outstanding milestone and we are grateful to each of our 25-year members,” Rebecca said.

“To dedicate 25 years of your working life not only to this profession but also to advocating for others in the sector is highly admirable.

“Upon reaching the milestone, each member receives a badge and certificate acknowledging their achievement,” Rebecca said.

Making a difference

Rebecca said each of this year’s 25-year membership recipients has made significant contributions to their school and kindergarten communities.

“Despite being on unique professional journeys, this year’s cohort is united in their shared belief in the collective,” she said.

“These members understand and have seen first-hand that being union strong makes a difference.

“The strong resolve of each of our 25-year members has resulted in many important wins across our industrial and professional landscape and has laid the foundation for the work we continue to do today.

“Their long-standing professional dedication and union spirit set a great example for those starting their IEU membership journey.

“We congratulate our 2025 25-year cohort and thank them for their ongoing solidarity,” Rebecca said.

25 years union strong

When reflecting on this milestone, school officer Vera Sendra said the achievement [represented] her commitment to working together to achieve positive outcomes to improve workplace conditions.

IEU Delegate and Mackay-based teacher Trish Brennan said over the years she has seen how collective action drives real change and is proud to have been part of that journey.

“Through collective bargaining, our union has secured vital improvements to working conditions and fair treatment in our profession.

Staying actively involved in the IEU ensures our voices continue to be heard,” she said.
