The Teacher Registration Board and the Northern Territory Board of Studies are integral to the work of Northern Territory teachers.

The NT government’s Education Standards and Registration Board Bill would undermine the independence and integrity of both entities by:

  • Removing all union (AEU and IEU) nominees from the Boards of both the TRB and the NTBOS.
  • Establishing a single authority to regulate both teacher registration and curriculum matters.
  • Enabling the Minister to hand-pick every member of the Board, without any requirement for appointees to be practising teachers.

These changes will affect your profession and your work.

If we don’t stop them now, these changes will be in place for the long term.

They will make the NT the only jurisdiction in the country that doesn’t have an independent board or statutory authority overseeing teacher registration.

This move disrespects teachers whose registration fees fund the registration board.

We have just days to respond. Don’t just take it – take action!

Send an email to your local member

All NT teachers are encouraged to send an email to their local Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) asking them to amend the bill before it’s passed.

Complete these steps to send an email to your representative:

  1. Check your Territory government electorate on the electoral commission website.
  2. Find the email contact address for your member on the NT parliament website.
  3. Use or adapt this suggested email text to write your email.
  4. Send the email from your personal email address expressing your concerns as a teacher in the local community (we recommend members do not name their workplace).
