The Teacher Registration Board and the Northern Territory Board of Studies are integral to the work of Northern Territory teachers.
The NT government’s Education Standards and Registration Board Bill would undermine the independence and integrity of both entities by:
- Removing all union (AEU and IEU) nominees from the Boards of both the TRB and the NTBOS.
- Establishing a single authority to regulate both teacher registration and curriculum matters.
- Enabling the Minister to hand-pick every member of the Board, without any requirement for appointees to be practising teachers.
These changes will affect your profession and your work.
If we don’t stop them now, these changes will be in place for the long term.
They will make the NT the only jurisdiction in the country that doesn’t have an independent board or statutory authority overseeing teacher registration.
This move disrespects teachers whose registration fees fund the registration board.
We have just days to respond. Don’t just take it – take action!
Sign the petition before the bill is voted on
Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are expected to vote on the bill next week.
With only days remaining, it is vital that MLAs understand the serious consequences this bill would have for NT schools.
