Employer attempt to restrict delegate rights quashed

19 November, 2024

Our union has successfully resolved a dispute with the Queensland Lutheran schools employing authority over IEU delegates’ right to communicate with staff.

Lutheran Education Queensland (LEQ) refused to allow IEU delegates to communicate with all staff via email and instead attempted to intervene as a third party by providing the delegate’s email address so staff could “opt in” to contact.

Recent amendments to the Fair Work Act have enshrined significant rights for union delegates to represent the industrial interests of members and those eligible to become members.

A key component of these rights is the right to reasonable communication with union members and eligible non-members about their industrial interests.
