Australian Unions have welcomed the creation of a new Office of AI to develop a coordinated approach to the impacts of AI.
The Office of AI will oversee the implementation of the proposed Australian Standards for AI, which were introduced earlier this month.
The standards will form the basis of mandatory requirements for large AI data centres (which power AI tools and platforms) and provide a mechanism to oversee AI impacts, create secure jobs and build sovereign AI capability in Australia.
It signals a more active approach from the federal government in how and where AI is made to ensure Australia is not the last link in the digital supply chain.
