Unacceptable religious discrimination exemptions must go

10 March, 2026

As part of International Women’s Day (IWD) last Sunday, 8 March, IEU members have renewed their calls to reform outdated and harmful religious discrimination exemptions that permit faith-based employers to discriminate against staff.

It comes after the United Nations (UN) Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights recently criticised Australia twice, recommending exemptions allowing this discrimination in Australian schools and healthcare be changed on both occasions.

IEU Federal Assistant Secretary Veronica Yewdall said IWD was born from union, labour and social movements of the early twentieth century, when women organised for the vote, safe workplaces and economic justice.
