Government paid parental leave increases to 26 weeks

18 June, 2026

In a significant win for working families, Australia’s government-funded paid parental leave (PPL) entitlement will increase to 26 weeks on 1 July 2026.

Unions have welcomed the Albanese federal government’s latest improvement to the government PPL scheme, which comes after tireless campaigning by union members over many years.

The increase will support women’s workforce participation and allow more fathers and partners to access time off work to spend with their children.
