Gender balance declines in school leadership

28 October, 2025

Women are increasingly underrepresented in leadership roles as Australian school leadership gender balance declines.

Latest insights from the Workplace Gender Equity Agency (WGEA) found leadership and managerial roles in education remain disproportionately held by men, despite the sector being one of the most feminised industries in the country.

Gender balance – considered by WGEA to be 40 per cent men, 40 per cent women and 20 per cent flexible gender representation in leadership – has declined in education leadership by 3.1 per cent since 2022.

Male appointments to managerial roles remain 7 per cent higher than those for women and the gender pay gap among education leaders is 8.6 per cent.
