Celebrating 10 years of Yubbah Action Group

13 May, 2025

Ahead of National Reconciliation Week 2025, our union is celebrating a significant milestone in our ongoing journey towards reconciliation – 10 years of the Yubbah Action Group.

The Yubbah Action Group, formed in 2015, is a working committee within our union ensuring our commitment to reconciliation is reflected through our activities.

The group is named after the Noonuccal word “Yubbah” meaning “message stick”, as our message stick was donated by Noonuccal woman Thersa Nunn, one of the group’s original members.

Today, the group has wide representation of First Nations IEU members, including teachers, principals and school officers from throughout Queensland and the Northern Territory.

10 years of making a difference

Dr Mayrah Dreise, the Senior Manager of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education at Brisbane Catholic Education, said the tenth anniversary of Yubbah Action Group was an important occasion.

“I am proud to be part of Yubbah Action Group and to support our union’s commitment to reconciliation and provide a voice for First Nations members in our sector,” Mayrah said.

“Through yarning, we can create agency and voice, and advocate for change,” she said.

Karla Brady, the CEO of Hymba Yumba Independent School and fellow Yubbah Action Group member, said reaching 10 years was an important achievement.

“I’m immensely proud of the group’s achievements and inspired by the collective leadership and shared commitment to progress,” Karla said.
