Wage theft widespread in higher education sector

20 February, 2023

The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) has warned the recent case of wage theft by the University of Melbourne highlights a widespread problem within Australia’s higher education sector.

According to the NTEU, a shameful and growing list of employers in the university sector have been caught out engaging in wage theft by underpaying casual staff, and campaigns by members have recovered millions of dollars in payments for those affected.

NTEU National President Dr Alison Barnes said rampant wage theft is a sector-wide issue underpinning many universities’ business models.
