Members’ voices reach Canberra

9 August, 2022

IEU members’ voices have been heard loud and clear in Canberra following a delegation of members to Parliament House last week.

The two days of action, organised by the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU), saw a delegation of 90 union members meet with 92 MPs and Senators.

IEU members Jo-Anne Desailly (QNT Branch) and Janene Rox (NSW/ACT Branch) participated in the delegation to ensure parliamentarians understood key professional issues facing the education sector – including insecure work, wage stagnation, a lack of autonomy for teachers and spiralling workloads.

Jo-Anne, a teacher and IEU-QNT Chapter representative, said a key factor in all of the professional issues discussed with politicians was the lack of balance in the current collective bargaining system.
