Queensland government attacks WHS laws

30 April, 2026

Our union has condemned the Queensland LNP government’s shameful plan to scrap critical protections and weaken Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation in its latest attack on the rights and conditions of the state’s workers.

As part of the changes, the Crisafulli government intends to water down existing Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws, repealing the mandatory nature of Codes of Practice under the WHS Act and replacing them with weakened national model WHS Codes.

This diminishes significant reforms achieved by unions, including obligations on employers to manage and prevent psychosocial hazards.

Additionally, the government is axing the rights of workers to cease unsafe work and for Health and Safety Reps (HSRs) to direct workers to stop unsafe work.
