US endures ‘single largest attack’ on unions

4 September, 2025

The Trump administration has stripped collective bargaining rights from approximately one million public sector workers in the United States.

President Trump recently issued an executive order denying bargaining rights to workers at a swathe of government agencies under the guise of “national security concerns”.

The loss of bargaining rights means unions can no longer fight agencies over contract violations.

Unions, including the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), are pursuing legal action to challenge the executive order.

“This is the single largest attack on the labour movement in our history,” Liz Shuler, president of the country’s peak union body, the AFL-CIO, told CNN.
