In 2026, IEU members want ACTION NOW! on workload, wages and contemporary workplace rights in Queensland Catholic schools.

Queensland Catholic school employers must address these meaningful improvements to working conditions for IEU members.

IEU members don’t need another review, another joint working party or another three years until the next bargaining round – IEU members need ACTION NOW!

What IEU members want ACTION NOW on:

  • ACTION NOW! …on addressing the workload crisis.
  • ACTION NOW!…on wages that recognise the value of their work.
  • ACTION NOW!…on implementing contemporary rights at work.
  • ACTION NOW! …on the recognition of specialist and leadership roles.

Why IEU members want ACTION NOW!

1. WORKLOAD CRISIS

The workload and work intensification crisis is driving teachers out of the profession.

For graduates, it is acting as a key reason not to pursue a teaching career.

Queensland Catholic school employers need to take ACTION NOW! to address these issues and protect the future of their schools.

2. WAGES THAT RECOGNISE THE VALUE OF THEIR WORK

Queensland Catholic school teacher and support staff wages and allowances have not kept pace with the real value of the work they perform. Nor have they addressed the continuing rise in the cost of living.

School support staff are taking on more responsibility, greater complexity and higher expectations than ever before. Yet their wage structures are outdated and have not been properly reviewed for over 30 years.

Queensland Catholic school employers need to take ACTION NOW! to ensure teachers and school support staff are paid wages that reflect the value of their work and the quality of education they provide.

3. IMPLEMENTING CONTEMPORARY RIGHTS AT WORK

Contemporary workplaces require contemporary rights at work.

Some working rights in Queensland Catholic schools have not kept pace with those in other non-government school sectors, with community expectations or with contemporary standards.

Queensland Catholic school employers need to take ACTION NOW! to ensure their employees are not left behind the rest of the sector.

4. RECOGNITION OF SPECIALIST AND LEADERSHIP ROLES

Catholic schools rely on a wide range of specialist roles including instrumental music tutors, counsellors, specialist teachers, Support Teacher Inclusive Education (STIEs), boarding school staff and library teachers. These roles often underpin a school’s unique identity and the reasons why parents and students choose to enrol, yet their work is often under‑recognised and/or not properly resourced in the current agreement.

Staff working in flexi schools support some of the most complex and vulnerable students in the system, yet some of their working conditions remain out of step with those of their colleagues in other Queensland Catholic schools.

Queensland Catholic school employers need to take ACTION NOW! to properly recognise the diverse range of specialist and leadership roles and provide the working conditions they need to do their jobs.
