Principal pressures threaten future schooling

13 May, 2025

An ongoing failure to address principal workload and other job stressors is placing the future of schools at risk.

The annual Australian Principal Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing Survey has again shone harsh light on key issues impacting principals including heavy workloads, occupational violence and a lack of time to teach.

IEU-QNT Branch Secretary Terry Burke said the situation was at breaking point.

“Every year the survey results paint an increasingly bleak picture of what is being experienced by our school leaders,” Mr Burke said.

“The latest survey shows experienced school leaders are exiting the profession, exacerbating teacher shortages and creating a nationwide leadership vacuum.

“Meaningful interventions into these issues by governments and employers are long overdue,” he said.
