What to do with a 4-cent cheque?

19 July, 2023

Cheque payments of 4 cents for royalty rights abound and coupled with the threat of jobs losses to the use artificial intelligence (AI), members of the Screen Actors Guild have moved to strike action.

The phenomenon of actors receiving measly cheques for residual payments is so ubiquitous within the industry that Residuals Tavern in Los Angeles exchanges any royalty cheque of less than $1 for a free drink.

The strike action  was announced by the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG–AFTRA), president, Fran Drescher, after members voted overwhelmingly to authorise a walkout, joining Writers Guild of America (WGA) members who have been on strike since May.
