Systemic underpayment rife in universities

18 July, 2023

An $8 million underpayment of University of Wollongong (UOW) staff reflects a systemic culture of wage theft in the sector.

UOW self-reported to the Fair Work Ombudsman after identifying underpayment of casual staff dating back to 2016.

The Vice Chancellor of UOW, Patricia Davidson, apologised to affected staff.

“The university deeply appreciates the dedication and contributions of our staff, who play an integral role in the success of our university,” she said.
