Despite numerous high-profile cases, egregious examples of wage theft continue to be unearthed.
A Brisbane sushi restaurant has been ordered to pay $355,000 in penalties after deliberately underpaying 34 employees and falsifying records during a Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) investigation.
The Federal Circuit and Family Court was satisfied Delishesco Pty Ltd which operates the Moga Izakaya & Sushi restaurant in Paddington and its sole director Yinan Yang had knowingly underpaid employees as part of a systematic pattern of conduct.
The $305,000 penalty against Delishesco and $50,000 penalty against Mr Yang represent the second highest penalty ever awarded in a FWO case in Queensland.
