Our community expects that employers can’t lawfully discriminate due to an employee’s sex, sexual orientation, marital status or pregnancy – yet special privileges continue to be granted to faith-based schools.
IEU Federal Secretary Brad Hayes said the federal government must not delay their election commitment.
“All workers, including every IEU member, are entitled to work free from discrimination,” Mr Hayes said.

As part of International Women’s Day (IWD) last Sunday, 8 March, IEU members have renewed their calls to reform outdated and harmful religious discrimination exemptions that permit faith-based employers to discriminate against staff.
In November last year, an important reform passed in federal Parliament prohibiting employers from cancelling or refusing employer-funded paid parental leave if an employee’s child is stillborn or dies shortly after birth.
Women’s workplace safety has declined over the past decade, while overall gender equality has risen modestly.
