Union advocacy has secured a payment increase for practicum supervision and continued negotiations for stronger protections of working conditions.
Our union, along with the Queensland Teachers Union (QTU) is continuing negotiations with the Australian Higher Education Industrial Association (AHEIA) which began late last year.
Practicums vs internships
While the guaranteed supervision payment increase is a great win for members, our union continues to work toward greater recognition of the role supervising teachers play in new and emerging ‘alternative’ modes of pre-service teacher experience, such as internships.
IEU-QNT Assistant Secretary/Treasurer Paul Giles said with these emerging practicum models, workloads and expectations of supervising teachers will change, and as such, practicum agreements will need provisions to reflect this.
