Nearly half of teachers ready to leave profession

13 June, 2022

New Monash University research has found that nearly half of teachers are ready to leave the profession due to unsustainable workloads.

Nearly 2500 primary and secondary school teachers from across the country took part in the research with only 41% of respondents saying they planned to remain in the profession.

Of those respondents, 62% referred to workload pressures and the detrimental impact on health, wellbeing and other aspects of their non-working lives.

Burnout, stress and exhaustion prevalent

Dr Fiona Longmuir, from the Monash research team, said teachers routinely described their workload as “excessive”. “unrealistic” and “unsustainable”.
