A prospective Labor government would take real action on equal pay for working women, it was announced on Labour Day/May Day.
Labor’s Fair Pay and Conditions for Working Women policy aims to address inequity in lower-paid, women-dominated industries such as education and care by:
- making gender pay equity an object of the Fair Work Act;
- strengthening the powers of the Fair Work Commission (FWC) to order pay increases;
- establishing a statutory “equal remuneration principle” to guide the way the FWC considers equal pay cases; and
- convening a Care and Community Sector Expert Panel and a Pay Equity Expert Panel to strengthen expertise within the FWC.
