Initial Teacher Education report misses the mark

Recommendations from the Teacher Education Expert Panel (TEEP) final report miss the mark when it comes to addressing the fundamental problems with Initial Teacher Education (ITE).

The report’s 14 recommendations have been agreed to in-principle by Australia’s Education Ministers and contain a combination of short and long-term reforms to be rolled out over the next three years.

IEU-QNT Research Officer Dr Adele Schmidt said while the report contains some suggestions for useful reform, the fundamental problem remains unaddressed.

“Supervision and mentoring of pre-service teachers is effectively underfunded and under-resourced work that is expected, even demanded, of schools and teachers,” she said.
