Formulaic test should be scrapped in face of AI

Education experts are calling for a radical change to the NAPLAN writing test to encourage students to “incorporate, critique, and exceed Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated writing”.

It is a question of whether students are being appropriately prepared to develop writing skills that will matter in the future, given AI writers can quickly produce the kind of formulaic writing encouraged by NAPLAN tests.

Dr Lucinda McKnight from Deakin University said AI technologies such as ChatGPT expose what a questionable use of time it is to teach students to write in formulaic, NAPLAN-style ways.

“When machines can write to formulas, humans need to develop different skills instead.
