Thursday 21st March marks Close the Gap Day 2024, and our union encourages members to contemplate the persisting gap in outcomes between First Nations and non-First Nations Peoples.
IEU-QNT Branch Secretary Terry Burke, caretaker of our union’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), said taking action on Close the Gap Day and working towards meaningful reconciliation was more important than ever.
“The defeat of the referendum for a Voice to Parliament in October 2023 highlights why solidarity with First Nations Australians is so important now more than ever,” Mr Burke said.
“In July 2023, the Productivity Commission released its Closing the Gap Annual Data Compilation Report, which showed eleven out of nineteen socioeconomic outcomes for First Nations Peoples are improving, with only four on track to meet their targets.
