Almost half Australia’s transport gig economy workers earn less than minimum wage despite working long hours in unsafe conditions.
A landmark report released this month by the McKell Institute in conjunction with the Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) highlights several serious issues faced by these vulnerable workers.
The research project involved one of the largest surveys of gig economy workers in Australia, with over 1,000 respondents from the transport industry’s food delivery, parcel delivery and rideshare sectors.
Among the issues detailed in the report were low pay, unpaid overtime, job insecurity and poor working conditions.
