Members set to celebrate #IEUnionStrong as Labour Day/May Day events return

28 April, 2021

After last year’s pause due to the pandemic, IEU members will join together to celebrate all the ways we are #IEUnionStrong this coming Labour Day /May Day long weekend (1-3 May 2021).

Labour Day in Queensland and May Day in the Northern Territory hold a significant place in union history.

The annual event is both an important reminder not to forget those who fought hard for decent and fair working conditions in Australia, as well as a celebration of their success and a chance to renew our commitment to ensuring a better future for all.

This year IEU members will celebrate in the following locations:

Saturday, 1 May – Ipswich & Toowoomba
Monday, 3 May – Brisbane, Darwin, Cairns & Townsville

IEU-QNT Branch Secretary Terry Burke said while this isn’t at the scale of our usual celebrations, it is nonetheless an opportunity to unite where we can (in a Covid-safe manner) to celebrate the many ways our union makes a difference in the non-government education community.

For over 100 years, we have worked with our members to protect their interests and advocate on their behalf,” Mr Burke said.

“Whatever stage of a member’s career, our union is with them every step of the way,” Mr Burke said.

“IEU membership means access to a community of 17,000 colleagues who understand the issues you face and a trusted, expert team of professionals ready to assist when you need it.

“It’s about having a strong voice at work and in the community.

“It’s the ability to campaign for better wages and working conditions through collective bargaining.

“We are #IEUnionStrong and together we make a difference.

“It’s our collective that endures, as it has done for the past 102 years, and it is our collective that will continue to provide members protection, support and peace of mind throughout their career in the non-government education sector,” Mr Burke said.
